I grew up that jello/jello salad was a side dish. It was entirely valid to have it on the table during the meal with the rest of the sides or on the buffet at Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. My in-laws think it's dessert. The first year we had TG, I did a 3 tiered jello salad and nobody would touch it because it was dessert. So, it was nice and warm by the time they went back for it.
That's another question - do you have a rest time between dinner and dessert on TG or do you have people poking into dessert while some are still going back for 2nds (3rds)? It's another difference I've had a hard time adjusting to with my in-laws. I grew up with dessert was never sooner than an hour after dinner. My in-laws consider it 3rds (4ths).

Re: What is jello in your house?
Jello is a side dish and dessert is after the meal when everyone is hungry again. Usually we do some cleaning up and putting away of the dinner items before we take out dessert.
Jello in our house growing up and even now, is like a dessert/treat. I make jumbo jello cups and DH takes them in his lunch every day. I have only ever had jello, the regular way, never made up like a salad.
Dessert on the holidays is always later in the evening after dishes are cleaned up and we have rested a bit.
Jello is a snack or dessert. And TG/Christmas dessert is always done as soon as the first person is ready for it LOL. We'll have some eating dessert while others are still working on dinner.
Jello salads were always a side dish in my house growing up. Not considered a dessert! And you have dessert after you rest a bit and do a little cleaning up....every once in awhile we will go straight to dessert, but not too often!

Jello has always been a desert...w/ the exception of the Holdiays. Granny makes the jello salad, and it's treated as a side. In day to day life though it is a treat.
The deserts usually come out after everything is clean and put away, then it's out for whomever might be ready, whenever. BUT there is no jello on that desert table! LOL
Jello is a dessert and not one that's ever in our holiday lineup. And dessert starts whenever someone is ready to start digging on. Sometimes we wait, sometimes there's something no one can resist.

This exactly! We have my grandmothers jello salad recipe that is a side at holiday meals which only my side of the family will eat ...my Dh's side won't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Otherwise it's a dessert.
It is often a side dish at any of our meals, not just TG. There are a couple of desserts that involve jello, so it can be classified as both.
In regards to dessert after the big meals - because some of the family heads to another house (which means we eat earlier than I would like) dessert gets served quickly too. If I am not in the mood than I will just wait. I liked to get the kitchen cleaned up too.
Mine is the same as some PP. Usually it's a snack/dessert, but at holidays it's a side.
Usually at holiday dinners the desserts are out and some people have stuff right away and others wait. It's eaten wherever and not at the table all together and people pick at different stuff the rest of the night.
