Jello has a place at every table in Utah, in fact its kind of a urban joke here. We aLWAYS eat jello, at least once a week and certainly on every holiday or gathering. In fact we had a family thing this past Saturday and jello was there! And its a side dish for us, not a dessert. We go for the really good stuff for desserts!!!
I've never seen jello at a family function either, maybe at a picnic, it seems like a summer food to me. My DD11 gets curious about it every year or so, I make it, she takes a bite, realizes it's not what she thought it would be, and is done with it.
Oh, I do like a wonderful jello salad, with pineapple and walnuts and whipped cream......yum......

Neither my family or dh's really ever make it...and never as a salad. I love strawberry w/ pieces of banana in it, but it's been years since I've made that. I do make finger jello every once in a while to just snack on. I ate a lot of jello when I was fasting for my colonoscopy earlier this year.
Jello is the stuff they make you eat when you are in the hospital.
lol not the way we make it - it has melted ice cream in the layers along with a ton of fruit. I suspect if I ever snuck it to someone in the hospital they'd throw me out.
Ha! My favorite lo-carb way is suger free jello & cream cheese whirled together in the blender, then it settles into nice fluffy layers as it gels. Mmmmmm.

We eat jello dishes.
Not often, but they are not strange being on the table.
They are considered sides most often, but if it has cool whip, nuts and fruit, it can also be considered a dessert. If it is chocked full of raisins, apples, celery carrots etc it is most often served with the meal.
Sometimes they have cottage cheese & fruit in them (its a side), or applesauce in lime jello.
Rarely will anyone eat 'naked' jello in our families, usually they end up being thrown out after turning watery from sitting for days and no one eating it. Jello is for 'doctoring' it up into something with veggies or fruit for a side dish, cool whip, coconut and nuts for a dessert dish.
Desserts are served usually about 3-4 hours after we finished dinner and the dishes are done and we have visited for awhile. They go on a seperate table because there isnt room for dessert with all the food we have for dinner. Clear the table on cleanup and move all the desserts to it. When we get ready to eat dessert then out comes the cool whip or RediWhip, ice cream, toppings etc.
We arent 'formal' about desserts, but we dont pick on them before everyone is ready either. We usually have candies or cheese ball/crackers, spiced nuts, the veggie tray etc for the snackers.
