I have a bit of a problem... my toes hang out of my cast & since it's been cold, my toes get cold which makes me cold, lol. I have never knitted or crocheted (spelling?), but I was thinking about going to Hobby Lobby or Michael's to get some kind of sock pattern & supplies to teach myself. I'm kinda hoping it will take my mind off the pain. So, is it difficult to do? Which one is better for socks? Any other tips to offer?
I haven't tried socks. For me crochet is better because I have carpel tunnel and it doesn't hurt my hands nearly so much. It isn't hard but I have not tried to follow that kind of pattern!

Crochet is faster and bulkier. If you use a very large hook and a thick yarn, it should be pretty easy to learn, and you'll end up with something bulky enough to make a difference over your cast. As for gauging the size to go over the cast...that might take a few tries.

Re: Question for those that knit or crochet
I wonder if you could find a really stretchy pair of socks to wear over your cast. Maybe some of those footsie slipper-sock things that are made of synthetic fibers? I'm just trying to think of warm things that would cover the cast.
My foot is huge! My cast goes from just where your toes meet your foot (does that have a name? lol) up to about 4 in below my knee. The nurse that wrapped it used a little more wrap than normal becase of the complexity of my breaks, so it's really bulky.
I'm not sure I can find a sock stretchy enough to fit over it, but I'll look some more. I think we may try to hit the craft store this week, too.
Thanks for the help! If anyone else wants to add any other suggestions, please do!

I think knit socks would we warmer since crochet is kind of holey. Google "bear toes socks" and you'll find a pattern that uses double strand worsted and larger needles.
Most socks are knit with thin yarn and tiny needles, so they take a long time, but I've heard the bear toes pattern is quick and pretty simple. You'll just need to cast on more stitches for it to fit over the cast.
I'd think you'd have to be able to find something somewhere to fit over your cast. I know I have some "one size fits all" slipper sock and those will stretch out pretty far! They are the real soft, chenille type slipper socks? Do you have any of those laying around?
