I have been having her write them 10 times, yet for her, it doesn't seem to be sinking in. We tried SpellingCity.com tonight and she enjoyed that, though when I tested her on the words later on she was still missing the same words. She seems to remember the words for only about 30 minutes and then forgets them. Next week, we will try an entire week of SpellingCity.com and see if she remembers them that way.

I get frustrated with the busywork math. I understand that they're trying to get through to kids who can't figure out straight up rote memorization but it's just so tedious.

No kidding--last night they came home with an exercise with these words:

To multiply 17 by 22, first make a grid 17 squares long by 22 squares wide. Next make a box around the 10x20 larger square, and the smaller squares of 2x10, 7x20 and 2x7 and add them all to reach the answer (374)

Okay, or you could just freakin' multiply 22x17. Seriously. They take a 5 second math problem and turn it into a page long 10 minute event-- because when you're doing the SATs and other standardized tests it's just so time efficient to draw out enormous grids and dissect them. I just wish they had a way to test them to exclude the kids who do already get it from the freakin' busywork.

I'm very glad that I get it and that my kids are bright. I can't fathom how much time people who are not math people have to waste on these time-suck methods.

Jules, you must have the same new math series we have. It teaches in the strangest way - the longest, most time-consuming way. Just show them how to do it and then use the other way for the kids who are struggling. As a teacher, it drives me crazy! Half the time I teach the lesson and then the book confuses them!

For me, I think it is the coloring homework in Kindergarten. DS5 HATES coloring...so it is a struggle making sure it gets done!
