new to the boards - i am getting ready to start taking prometrium 200mg once a day vaginally. Has anyone taken this or heard of anyone on this? I am anxious to see if it will help me. I have had three confirmed m/c..and im sure numerous others that end very very early like 1-3 weeks. My doctor said that i dont produce enough progestrone so he suggested that i try this starting 4 days past ovulation, in hopes that if i were to become pregnant that the hormone will keep the pregnancy.

I've not taken it so I can't help you there; however, it's definitely a good sign that you're actually getting pregnant.

Do you chart your cycles by any chance? I can't say enough about TTC and charting; the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is amazing as it covers all the ins and outs of how a woman's cycle works, how to chart, how to use charting to conceive, how to use it for birth control, etc.

The reason I ask is because if you have a short luteal phase (that's the time between when you ovulate and when your period starts) it's definitely possible that you aren't producing enough progesterone because the ovarian follicle (the follicle that released the mature egg) doesn't have enough time to release enough progesterone into your system. Wait, I'm paranoid I'm not explaining it properly ... let me google:

The luteal phase is the time from ovulation to the next period. It is typically 10-16 days in length, but it is usually fairly consistent in length for an individual woman, differing by no more than 1 or 2 days from cycle to cycle. During this time the corpus luteum secretes progesterone while attached to the ovarian wall. Progesterone is what maintains the thickness of the endometrium to support implantation by a fertilized egg. If implantation does not occur, the corpus luteum runs out of progesterone and menstruation soon follows. If implantation does occur, the implanted zygote secretes hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a chemical signal which tells the corpus luteum to continue producing and secreting progesterone.

Luteal phase lengths of less than 10 days are considered too short for implantation to occur, and may thus indicate a problem with successfully achieving pregnancy. In such an instance, the egg may be fertilized, but the endometrium is sloughed off before implantation can occur. This condition is sometimes referred to as a luteal phase defect. If you suspect you have a short luteal phase, you should see your healthcare professional about it. Short luteal phases may be corrected with progesterone treatment.

First site result was TCOYF site LOL

I absolutely loved learning about my cycles and how my body worked. I found it interesting and I definitely felt more in control of my body because I knew what was going on. It also helped me explain to my doctor exactly what I thought was going on and we conceived much quicker than I thought we would.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I'm by no means an expert, but I've BTDT :)

I took it during my IVF cycle. I first did Progesterone in oil injections and had a reaction to them so the RE changed me to prometrium. It worked and DS will be 1 this week!! They are messy though:rolleyes: Use some of those free pantiliners you probably have:) Good luck. Did he tell you to try baby aspirin also? That increases your uterine lining to help with implantation! PM me if you have any questions, went through infertility for 3 years!!

The advice I would give you is to insert in the evenings and then go right to bed, and be sure that you have a liner/pad, because it creates quite a bit of discharge.

I used it during my second pregnancy. My doctor confirmed that my progesterone levels were low so he wanted me on it until I was 12 weeks into my pregnancy. It was messy, but as long as I used it at night, it wasn't too bad. While TTC, I also used B6 supplement to help increase my luteal phase. I am not sure exatly what worked and what didn't, but I now had DD is 4 years old. I guess things worked itself out for my next pregnancy as I didn't need any help from any progesterone.

same here - i took it for the first 16 wks of my last pregnancy. i was taking 400 mgs vaginally for the first 12 weeks, then 200 mg orally for 4 weeks. i would insert it as soon as i got up in the am and then right before bed (directions call for you to lay flat for 15-20 min after insertion). i will tell you that i did feel a lot better when i was on it, so i was able to tell i was low.

Sort of. I suffered from secondary infertility for almost 12 yrs. I went through everything know to man with my dr. We gave up several years ago. As you can see I am pregnant. Great suprise. My dr put me on this 2 times a day for the first 12 weeks. Very messy and it can cause some itching and other not so nice symptoms, but it was all well worth it.

Reason: Sorry; no links to sites with message boards.

Canuck, if you're interested in the site, please PM me. It's very informative and full of wonderful resources for people who are TTC. (I didn't even know it had a message board.)

thanks for all the great responses. I did temping for several months...my temps were up and down..i couldnt tell if and when I was ovulating...we have since invested in the clearblue easy ovulation monitor..we are now on cycle two with this...I love it...never knew that each month i ovulated at different times. Last month I ovulated on day 15 this month i ovulated on day 17.

The ptrometrium is in capsule form - that they are having me take vaginally. the doctor didnt really say a better time to take this...just to take same time every day. I just hope that i dont have two many side effects.
