Having niece's family over, and she is a straight out FO soup addict. She (and I) could easily just eat that for dinner, but we still have to feed all those boring people who insist on having actual solid food with it. So far we've done chicken Alfredo, pizza, meatloaf and fried chicken. Trying to come up with another idea that is:
kid adaptable
won't violate the picky veggie rules of assorted people
makes sense to have with soup without a lot of other sides
doesn't take all day (work-wise, crock pot ok)

Everything we think of is either too elaborate or just doesn't go with onion soup.

Well, I am no help - we always do soup w/ salad and some yummy bread. Can you do a salad w/ a big variety of veggies and people can create their own with only the veggies they like? If that doesn't work, I'd just make the soup for you and your niece and then some type of easy casserole/crock pot dish for the rest of the gang?

I'm not sure if this helps the picky eaters but we love making Caesar Salad with our French Onion soup!

I always think of sandwiches going with soup. Maybe you can come up with some fancy sandwiches/hoagies to go along with it? Maybe one of PWs creations?

I had the most awesome meal at a local restaurant recently. They called it a French Onion Fillet. It was a petite Fillet Mignon topped with Gorgonzola cheese on top of a large crouton with french onion soup around it. It was served in a pasta bowl and was the yummiest thing I have had at a restaurant in a very long time.

I need to tell DH about this - he may very will have "a moment" when he reads that!

ROFL! I had "a moment" when the server described it...LOL!! It was a special -- not on the regular menu! That's probably a good thing or I would be there every day. :D

I always make Toasted Turkey & Swiss Sandwiches when I make FO soup. My kids LOVE them, they're super duper easy, and not expensive to make. I pile on the turkey pretty thick. YUMM-O.
