Has anyone tried a night guard for grinding teeth? I tried the kind you boil and that was terrible. Too big and bulky and made me drool. I wore it for like 15 minutes and said this is enough! There's one for around $50 that was made by a dentist. I've read pros and cons about it. Anyone ever worn one or have one you recommend?

I haven't tried one although my DD and I both really need them. I saw a commercial on tv that they have some that are being released over the counter, is that the boiling one you're talking about?

Both of the ones I mentioned you can get over the counter. Maybe the one I haven't tried is the new one. It seems to be alot less bulky and annoying than the one you boil. The one I already bought was $20 and the new one is $50.

I use one. It was three hundred bucks, custom made to fit my teeth and fitted just for me. It works awesome. It has been worth every dime I paid for it in deminished jaw pain.

I have to wear one, this is my third since my teens! My last one cost $450.00  My dentist makes them by hand and it is the best quality yet, it ought to be. I am a very hard grinder :(

I wear one that my dentist made for me. It was quite expensive though. I think I paid around $175 after my insurance paid their portion. I recommend it though. It fits my teeth perfectly. Nothing over-the-counter can compare.

Ugh. I went to the dentist last week and he told me for the second time that I really needed to get a night guard made. He said he doesn't make them, so he gave me the name of an orthodontist in town. I called the orthodontist and the secretary said that the orthodontist "only makes them if you have extreme TMJ." But she said for $125 I can come in and get an evalution. She then added "But he probably won't make you one, because he's really trying to get away from making them." HUH?? So I should come in and pay $125 just to have him tell me he won't make me one? No thanks - I told her I'd call someone else. LOL

I have to do something soon though, my jaw and teeth are killing me and I'm having wicked migraines more and more often.. :(

My son and mother both need them. DS 19 has significant wear on his teeth due to grinding. We got his made at the dentist and it cost ~$300 as I recall, but it is worth it! He sleeps better and has less pain in the am.

ABC, I would try calling some other dentists - that doesn't sound right to me!

Good luck!

I think your best bet is getting a guard custom fit from the dentist... My dh had to have one too.. We tried the ones from the drug store and they were just a waist of money... The ones from the Dentist are expensive but worth the money... My dh stopped having problems with his teeth not to long after he started wearing the one from the dentist... I think we paid about $100 we got a discount because we paid cash...
